Ice Skating: Honours for man from Harvard

Source: The Times (London)
Date: October 9, 1987
Author: John Hennessy

Paul Wylie, an undergraduate at Harvard, skated a superb free programme at Richmond last night to win the St Ivel Ice International. Kurt Browning, of Canada, won the free skating but had left himself too much to do after the first two elements of the competition to climb above Wylie as well as the overnight leader, Heiko Fischer, of West Germany.

Wylie has strong British connections, for it was his family who befriended Robin Cousins during the former Olympic champion's stay in Colorado, Cousins, in return, helped Wylie with his choreography.

Wylie suffered one fall but as this was in attempting the daunting triple axel, it was no great disaster. Otherwise he skated with much technical control and artistry. His programme was packed with cleanly executed triple jumps and there was an echo from the past at one moment with his skid change edge, a Cousins speciality.

Browning did manage the triple axel, though not quite on a true running edge, and performed two triple jumps in combination in a programme freely sprinkled with athletic achievement.

Sharon Jones and Paul Askham, the British ice dance champions, moved up a place after an appealing free skating programme to take second position behind the favourites, Maya Ussova and Aleksandr Zhulin, of the Soviet Union.
