Snuggle Up With Celebrity Neckties

The ladies from the needlework division at the Sutton Fair want you to tie one on for a good cause.

They're working their needle magic on the second special quilt that will be auctioned off at the fair.

Proceeds are going to the family of a seven-month-old Georgina baby battling leukemia.

But these pieces of cloth art are not just any quilt.

For months, the women have been approaching celebrities and sports stars to donate ties for the cause, committee chairperson Shirley Stiles said. The ties were then stitched into eight-inch square panels, 30 in each of the two quilts to be auctioned off.

Celebrity donors include comedian Rick Mercer, news anchor Lloyd Robertson, former Ontario lieutenant-governor Lincoln Alexander, Argo coach Mike Pinball Clemons, singer Tommy Hunter, skater Kurt Browning, media mogul Ted Rogers, comedian Dave Broadfoot, hockey stars Wendel Clark, Andy Moog and Bob Gainey, disabled activist hero Rick Hansen -- and that's just for starters.

"Everyone was very gracious and receptive to our request," Mrs. Stiles said.

Not only will the two lucky winners take home the tie quilts, they will also get letters of authenticity and photographs of the donors, as well as many celebrity autographs.

The tie auction is Aug. 6 at 2 p.m. during the Sutton Agricultural Fair and Horse Show, which runs Aug. 4, 5, 6, 7.
