What I'm Watching/Kurt Browning

CBC-TV's Battle of the Blades, pairing ex-hockey players and figure skaters in an ice-dancing reality contest, is all about the chemistry between the skaters. But hosts Ron MacLean and Kurt Browning have also formed a solid on-air duo - MacLean representing the hockey camp, Browning the figure skaters and both engaging in competitive banter. Truth be told, though, whenever Browning can find any time between his television gigs and Stars on Ice appearances, hockey is what he tends to tune into.

A hockey game on TV or a favourite drama - which are you more inclined to watch?

Until I started to travel, I kept up with what the NHL was up to. But after all the tour shows began, the only time I watched hockey was the Oilers with my dad. I have to admit it is now my TV option with what little free time I have.

As a little boy in Alberta did you watch figure-skating on TV and decide that's what you wanted to try?

No! We did watch figure skating, especially after I got figure skates, but never do I remember thinking anything about wanting to do that when I grew up. ... I was inspired by the Olympics and often pretended I was in them, but if I remember correctly I was usually running, not skating.

Do you and Ron MacLean give each other pointers to get the right compromise between hockey and figure-skating commentary?

I think Ron and I understand each other's world very well. ... Our job is to host the party, and we do not pass too much judgment on anyone. We leave that to the judges.
