RICHMOND, England (CP) - Paul Wylie of the United States fell once
but held on to win the men's singles gold medal at the St. Ivel figure
skating competition yesterday despite a brilliant long program by
Canada's Kurt Browning.
Wylie, a political science student at Harvard University, fell on
a difficult triple axel but scored well for artistry.
He finished with 4.2 penalty points, while Browning had 5.0 and
East Germany's Heiko Fischer, the leader after the compulsory and
short program, fell to third, also with 5.0.
Browning, from Rocky Mountain House, Alta., flawlessly pulled off
seven triple-jumps in the 4 1/2 minute routine and let two others open
up to doubles. His score was hurt by a poor short program on
Wednesday.
Maja Ussova and Alexandr Zhulin of the Soviet Union easily won the
ice dance event with 2.0 points, with Sharon Jones and Paul Askham of
Britain second with 5.0.
Joanne Borlase of Willowdale, Ont., and Martin Smith of Woodstock,
Ont., finished sixth in their first international competition as a
duo.
Canada's Denise Benning and Lyndon Johnston won the gold medal in
the pairs competition on Wednesday, while Patricia Schmidt was fourth
in the women's singles.
