ISU
Prize Money:
The
ISU pays prize money to the first five places in all four categories
for the Grand Prix Series events. For the Grand Prix Series final,
the top six finishers get prize money, plus bonuses. A bonus purse is
set aside for athletes who scored points but did not qualify for the
Grand Prix Final, though the points only count if they did not get
prize money for the event. Exhibition fees are also paid to skaters
who have not won prize money but perform in the exhibition. Pairs and
dance have to split the purse.
The
total prize purses for the Grand Prix have gone down in the last two
years, since the ISU went from a $22+ million per year contract with
ABC to a $5 million per year contract with ESPN.

Steve Disson
Disson Skating
Steve Disson has
been involved in the sport of figure skating since 1989, through the
Sudafed Skating Gymnastics Spectacular in Vail, CO. He initially came
in through the sponsor side of the business, representing Sudafed, and
was responsible for finding and reorganizing the event to benefit both
the sponsor and the event. He went on to work with Brian Boitano and
Katarina Witt on their Skating tour, bringing in Chrysler as a
sponsor, and getting the show aired on CBS in 1992. He also brought
Chrysler in as the sponsor for the Nutcracker on Ice tour. Through
his association with Brian Boitano, Disson began to become involved on
the production side of things, working with White Canvas Productions
to produce the Skating Romance show and other made-for-TV specials
that aired primarily on the USA Network. He went on to help create
and produce Brian's show for NBC, as well as an event with Katarina
Witt, and then partnered with Robin Cousins to produce the StarSkates
series. "Before you knew it, we had eight shows a year on NBC that I
was producing, and buying the time on NBC, and then selling it to
different sponsors, and finding sites to do the event...Basically, the
concept behind them all was one time only made for TV specials with
live entertainers...I've done a lot of skating shows over the years
with Robin and Brian, and trying to get with good, not only name
skaters, but people who are having interest creatively in producing
unique and quality programming for television."
