A Quadruple Jump on Ice

BUDAPEST, March 25 (AP) - Kurt Browning of Canada acheived the first quadruple jump in competition during his free-skating program at the world figure skating championships today, upstaging another gold-medal effort by Brian Boitano of the United States. Browning landed the jump on one foot and got credit for the quadruple from Josef Dedic, vice president of the International Skating Union.

Later, Boitano also attempted a quadruple, but landed on two feet and said, "It was a little overrotated." Still the 24-year-old from Sunnyvale, Calif., added the world title to his Olympic runner-up, won the long program and finished second over all.

Browning's jump helped him move up to his sixth over all with the evening's third-best program. He was ninth following the short program.

In the women's event, Debi Thomas of the United States won the short program, but was still second to Katarina Witt of East Germany going into the freestyle finale Saturday. Witt, who won the compulsory phase Thursday, held such a slim margin over Thomas that she needed to win the long program in order to capture the title.
