The Kurt Files has been compiled to provide extensive background on the figure skater known as Kurt Browning, aka "The Kid from Caroline", aka "Skate God Jr.," as well as to track his current skating activities and public appearances. The skater has been known to take on various guises, from clown to flamenco dancer to cowboy, but can be recognized by his fast feet and personal charisma. The 20th anniversary of Kurt Browning landing the first ever quadruple jump in competition at Worlds in Budapest, Hungary on March 25, 1988 was Tuesday. To celebrate the occasion, Kurt fans put together an online card, and a group donation to the Terry Fox Foundation, a charity Kurt has helped in the past which is dedicated to cancer research. As the result of our efforts, we raised $800 Canadian for the Terry Fox Foundation. Thanks so much to all the generous fans who donated! The card can be seen here. The link to the card and the information about the donation have been sent on to Kurt. Thanks to everyone who participated!

  • The CTV website has a great 16 minute long interview with Kurt and Sonia, which ranges over a variety of topics, from parenting, getting back in shape after a baby, and their partnership with My Organic Baby to Kurt's thoughts on boycotting the Olympics from an athlete's perspective, and Kristi Yamaguchi on Dancing with the Stars.     • Beverley Smith of the Globe and Mail has a fantastic long article on the quad, Kurt landing the first one, and the quad today, with quotes from Kurt and many others about the soon to be 20-year-old jump: Chasing the quad. The online article is 3 pages long, and the print version has a diagram and breakdown of the quad on the front page of the Globe Sports section, above the center fold. Check it out!

    • Kurt Browning performed in the Davos Gala "Movies on Ice" this year in Davos, Switzerland on Feb. 8 and 9, 2008. He performed two numbers - "Hey Pachuco" from the Mask and Rag-GIDON-Time, as well as coming out for a number of in-between interactions with the host. The show was televised on Eurosport on March 1, and will be apparently televised again March 12 at 7PM on Eurosport. For German speakers, here is the gala's website.   • since 2/23/08:

    • Added program information for Chequered Love, the program Kurt skated to while Kim Wilde performed live on the Art on Ice tour this year.

    • I've put up my photos and review of the San Jose Stars on Ice show on Feb. 10, 2008. Kurt Browning did not perform in this show. I've also added the 2007-08 Tour Program and some merchandise info for this year's tour.

  • since 2/9/08:

    • Kurt Browning is listed as the special guest star in this year's Skating Club of Boston's Ice Chips show, to be held April 5 (1PM, 7PM) and April 6 (2PM) at Harvard Arena.

    • Kurt will be working with Pedigree in Canada on their Pet Adoption campaign, doing a series of PSA's and media for them.

  • since 2/4/08:

    • Kurt Browning is currently in Europe, touring with the Art on Ice tour. According to a poster on FSU, he is performing to a song by Kim Wilde, and to his Rag-GIDON-Time program. If anyone has any reviews - of Kurt's performances or the whole show - please email me!

    • Kurt Browning's third and final blog post for Canadians is up on the CBC site: It's good to be back in the land of Canadian skating..

  • since 1/22/08:

    • Kurt Browning was all over CBC's coverage of Canadians this past weekend, which bodes well for his participation in CBC's Worlds coverage in March. He commentated the men's and ladies' events, did backstage interviews, handed out medals, and his/Tracy's commentary was used on CBC Country Canada for portions of the competition. For those outside of Canada, many of the final flight performances are up on YouTube, and Kurt's commentary can be heard there. Thanks to Shery for a lot of this information.

    • US champion Christopher Bowman, one of Kurt Browning's primary competitors in his early eligible days, passed away on Jan. 10 at the age of 40. Kurt talks about Bowman in this Globe and Mail article: The Showman shines no more.

    • CBC announced a two-year deal with the ISU to broadcast the World Championships and the 2009 Four Continents figure skating championships. Kurt Browning is confirmed to commentate the 2008 World Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, for CBC. The broadcast stars March 18.

    • The National Post has a good review of Peter Pan: Well, look who grew up.

    • There's a short clip on YouTube from a Ryerson news entertainment show talking to Kurt about Peter Pan, including some brief stage footage of Peter sparring with Hook (and some backstage footage of Kurt working with Ross).     • The December issue of International Figure Skating Magazine has a 3/4 page article talking to Kurt about the birth of baby Dillon. It's available at newsstands now.

    • Kurt Browning's on stage in Toronto right now as Peter Pan, and I had the chance to see the first two performances last week. I've added my review of Peter Pan to the Miscellaneous Fan Stuff page. The show is excellent, and Kurt proves himself to be a very natural and charismatic theatre actor - better than I had expected, in fact! If you're in the Toronto area between now and Jan. 6, 2008, I highly recommend going to see the show. For more, read my review.

    • Exciting news for European Kurt Browning fans! For the first time in years, Kurt will be skating on tour in Europe. Kurt will be touring with Art on Ice in early February, and will likely be performing his Rag-GIDON-Time number. The tour visits Zurich and Lausanne, and tickets are on sale now. Visit the Art on Ice website for more information.

    • Kurt will be behind the microphone again this year, commentating at Skate Canada and Canadians for CBC. Skate Canada takes place Nov. 1-4 in Quebec, and will be broadcast on CBC Nov. 2-4, with the exhibition broadcast Nov. 17. Canadians takes place Jan. 16-20 in Vancouver.

    • The Frosted Pink website has more videos up with Kurt in them. Check out day 5 in particular for an extended segment talking to Kurt and footage of his "Time in a Bottle" performance. The videos are also up on YouTube (search Frosted Pink) if you have trouble playing them on the website. And don't forget to tune in tomorrow, Oct. 14, from 4-6PM EST on ABC to watch the show!

  • since 10/11/07:

    • Kurt Browning's Gotta Skate took place last night in Mississauga, ON with musical performers the Temptations and Boyz II Men. He skated a fantastic duet with Shae-Lynn Bourne to "Proud Mary" by Tina Turner, a hilarious program to "Papa was a Rolling Stone" by James Brown, and a Shae-Lynn-choreographed program to "Motown Philly."     • The Globe and Mail has an article on the Temptations and their part in Gotta Skate: The Temptations provide music for show, but won't be donning skates.

    • I've finally put up a review of Kristi Yamaguchi's Friends and Family on the Miscellaneous Fan Stuff page.

    • I've finally got my photos from Kristi Yamaguchi's Friends and Family up on the Photo Evidence page. There are photos from rehearsal and the show. I was in a better location for dress rehearsal, so many of those photos are better than the show photos.

    • The Frosted Pink website now has behind-the-scenes videos up, including footage of Kurt practicing and being interviewed. You have to register to view the videos, but registration is free and fast. Look at the Day 2 video to find Kurt. Thanks Sherry!

    • Frosted Pink was taped yesterday in Santa Monica, and Getty Images has a few pages of photos of the arrivals, skating, and backstage. There are 4 photos of Kurt here - 3 arrival shots, 1 skating shot (he's wearing his "Are You Lonesome Tonight"/"Time in a Bottle" costume). Arrivals, Show Images, and Backstage.     • The Globe and Mail has a nice article about Shae-Lynn Bourne with some information about Gotta Skate, including the promised duet between Kurt and Shae-Lynn. Smith: Bourne, Kraatz keep door open.

  • since 10/1/07:

    • Kurt Browning as listed as a featured performer in Frosted Pink, a breast cancer awareness event featuring some of the top figure skaters, plus a whole slew of entertainers that will be broadcast on ABC on Oct. 14, 2007 from 4-6PM EST. According to IFS Magazine, Kurt has self-choreographed a number for this event. The show will also be rebroadcast on the Style Network.

    • Kurt Browning hosted the Kristi Yamaguchi Friends and Family show on Saturday night in Phoenix. He didn't skate, but he provided fun introductions throughout the show, alongside Kristi Yamaguchi. The show will air Nov. 25, 2007 from 4-6PM EST on NBC. For a brief recap, visit the Kurt Files' bb.     • Friday's Toronto Star apparently has a photo of Kurt with the caption "Kurt Browning gets off the ice and into the air as Peter Pan in November," according to a post on FSU.

    • Kurt appeared on Breakfast Television this morning promoting Gotta Skate. He skated for 3 hours with the Port Credit Figure Skating Club, teaching them moves. There's a short video up on the Breakfast Television blog talking to Kurt. Thanks for the info, Reggie!

    • Congratulations to Kurt, Sonia, and Gabe, and welcome to the world baby Dillon! Kurt and Sonia's second son was born Aug. 14, 2007. An official release should come out shortly.

    • Tickets for Kurt Browning's Gotta Skate go on sale via an Internet presale July 16-18 through Ticketmaster. The presale will be for Ticketmaster members subscribed to "Skating Shows" for the greater Toronto area and AMEX Front of the Line customers. The general sale should start shortly after the presale ends. Ticketmaster has not yet put up a link for the show, but keep an eye out since it should go up in the days before the presale starts.

    • The Disson Skating site has been releasing cast information a bit at a time. The cast for Gotta Skate is currently Kurt Browning, Sasha Cohen, Jeff Buttle, Evan Lysacek, Joannie Rochette, Shae-Lynn Bourne, Marie-France Dubreuil & Patrice Lauzon.     • manleywoman at FSU has started putting together a series of figure skating podcasts for the hard-core fan, in-depth interviews with key figures both behind the scenes and in front of the audiences in the sport. Her first interview is with Kurt Browning, and it's a really good one - some 30 minutes plus, covering a wide range of topics from Kurt's childhood to the present day.
